Antelopes have adapted to many different ecological niches and so vary in their size, shape, locomotion, diet, social organization, and antipredator strategy. Despite the diversity of adaptations, one important generalization can be made: there is a marked difference between antelopes of closed habitats and those of open habitats.

Adaptation The presence of sharp molars helps them in grinding the cud easily, hence, facilitating digestion. The gum pad assists in tearing stems, leaves, and grass, when bitten against by the lower incisors. Their slender, sturdy legs help them take long strides and run at top speed and even climb trees when the need arises.

Not surprisingly for animals with long, slender yet powerful legs, many antelope have long strides and can run fast. Some (e.g. klipspringer) are also adapted to inhabiting rock koppies and crags. Both dibatags and gerenuks habitually stand on their two hind legs to reach acacia and other tree foliage.

Antelope have unique adaptations. To survive in their respective environments, antelope have developed various adaptations. Some have specialized hooves for different terrains, while others have intricate social behaviors to ensure the survival of their herd.
